History Teacher, 80% position, Fall 2025

Job Description:

Maybeck High School, a small, independent, college-preparatory high school in Berkeley, seeks a history teacher for the 2025–2026 academic year. The History Teacher will teach 1–2 sections of our year-long 9th grade World History as well as 2–4 sections of semester-long History/Humanities/Social Science electives or 1–2 year-long sections of U.S. History. Each class meets three times weekly from late August through May. Classes in our recent programming include Women’s Movements in the 21st Century, LGBT+ History, History of the Black Artist, History of Social Justice Movements, Revolutions and Media, Sociology of Cults, and many more. We support teachers to teach classes in their discipline that align with their passion and expertise.

Maybeck values experiential education, beginning and ending the year with all-school camping retreats, holding two weeks of immersive learning “Special Programs” in March, and engaging students in a range of elective activities on the weekends. We are looking for applicants who are interested in working with students in and out of the classroom; in teaching student-centered history courses that allow students to take ownership of their learning. Applicants should have demonstrated excellence in developing courses and teaching history to bright, creative, engaged students, as well as experience differentiating their curriculum to reach all learners in the classroom.

We are a vibrant community dedicated to learning, where all forms of diversity can flourish amid mutual support, respect, and responsibility. Through our small classes, high expectations, academic excellence, and programs outside the school, students prepare for college and acquire the tools to engage actively and creatively in the wider world.
