Maybeck High School has a strong commitment to learning experiences outside of the classroom. During Special Programs, the school suspends regular classes to allow students to take part in small group programs led by staff members. These programs allow staff to share passions with students, let students experience mastery in a non-classroom setting, and foster a sense of community among staff and students as new groups spend time together in an extended and authentic in-depth experience.
Local Programs
Local programs take place on campus and around the Bay Area. Some past programs include mime and body movement, filmmaking, digital photography, oil painting, mural painting in our hallways, dual-line kites, meditation, music recording studio, hiking, building radio-controlled gliders, organic gardening, cooking and sewing, fencing, Spanish and Latin American film, European cinema, Bay Area culture, kayaking, windsurfing, skateboarding, and sailing.
Regional and Hybrid Travel Programs
Regional and hybrid travel programs spend one or more nights together away from home. Past programs include bicycle touring along the California coast, astronomy, skiing & snowboarding, hiking in Canyonlands, surfing, scuba diving, cooking and farming, and trips across the U.S. from Hawaii to Washington, D.C.
International Travel Programs
Each year, Maybeck staff plan international trips that allow students to immerse themselves in a foreign culture and practice self-reliance and responsibility far from the comforts of home. On every trip, students rise to the occasion, whether navigating an unfamiliar public transit system, making connections with people in a foreign language, or supporting each other on a tiring hike. We have explored over 25 countries and counting, including Belize, China, Jordan, New Zealand, and South Africa.
The programs offered vary from year to year, although some programs get repeated. Maybeck students can expect a wide variety of offerings each year both near and far. Students who are on reduced tuition receive the same reduced tuition percentage for any program they choose.
